How to Replace the Ignition Rod

The ignition rod (hot rod) can be replaced at home in approximately 20-30 minutes. You will need a Phillips-head screwdriver and a flathead screwdriver.

Ensure the grill is completely powered off and unplugged. Wait at least 1 hour after the last use, as the ignition rod reaches extreme temperatures and retains heat.

Replacement Steps

  1. Remove the grill grates, drip tray, and heat baffle to expose the firepot.
  2. Locate the ignition rod, a ceramic-tipped rod protruding horizontally into the firepot from the side.
  3. Remove the 2 screws securing the ignition rod bracket.
  4. Photograph the wiring connection before disconnecting it for reference.
  5. Disconnect the ignition rod wiring from the controller or from the inline connector, if present.
  6. Slide the old rod out of the bracket.
  7. Insert the new ignition rod and secure it with the bracket screws.
  8. Reconnect the wiring.
  9. Reassemble the grill interior and run a short startup test to ensure everything is working properly.
