Not Enough Smoke During Cook

Several factors can reduce smoke output. Here’s how to maximize it:

  • Cook at lower temperatures: Smoke production drops significantly above 225°F. For maximum smoke, use the Smoke setting.
  • Check pellet quality: Old, moist, or low-quality pellets produce much less smoke flavor. Try using a fresh bag of pellets.
  • Try stronger wood types: Hickory, mesquite, and competition blends produce more smoke flavor than apple or alder at the same temperature.
  • Add a pellet smoke tube: A stainless steel smoke tube filled with lit pellets sits on the grill grates and adds extra smoke at any temperature — great for high-heat cooks, where the grill naturally produces less smoke.
