Understanding Your Controller — Dials, Modes & Settings

The controller is the brain of your Z Grills. Here's what each setting and mode does.

Temperature Settings

Most Z Grills models have a temperature range of 160°F to 450°F (up to 500°F on the Multitasker series). Non-WiFi controllers adjust in 25°F increments, while WiFi controllers adjust in 5°F increments. The controller automatically manages the auger feed rate, fan speed, and igniter rod to maintain your set target temperature.

Special Modes

ModeWhat It DoesWhen to Use
SMOKE160–180°F, maximum smoke outputLow and slow cooking; to enhance the smoky flavor.
FEEDForces the auger to continuously feed pellets, raising the temperatureFor initial pellet ignition; when the lid is opened and the temperature drops, it helps the grill recover heat faster.
SHUT DOWNCooling cycle — finishes grilling and shuts down, fan continues to run for 10 minutes to blow out remaining heat in the burnerUse every time you shut down the grill.

💡 When shutting down a model, always use the Shut Down cycle — never cut power mid-cook by unplugging the unit. Cutting power abruptly can leave embers smoldering in the firepot, creating a risk of backburn and smoke/fire flashback into the hopper. For WiFi models, press the power button to initiate the shutdown and cooling cycle (on the 1000D4E, navigate to the menu to select shutdown).

Tip: If you've just finished cooking on HIGH, turn the dial back to Smoke and let it run for 10 minutes until the flame dies down naturally before switching to Shut Down Cycle.
