What Wi-Fi Frequency Does Z Grills Use? (2.4GHz vs 5GHz)

Z Grills Wi-Fi models use only 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. They are not compatible with 5GHz-only networks.

Why 2.4GHz?

5GHz is faster than 2.4GHz, but 2.4GHz has a longer range and better penetration through walls and outdoor obstacles — which is important for a grill that's typically 20–50 feet from your router and separated by exterior walls.

Common Setup Issue: Dual-Band Routers

Many modern routers broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands under the same network name (SSID). If your phone happens to be connected to the 5GHz band during the grill setup, the connection will fail.

How to Fix This

  • Log into your router settings and split the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands into separate network names — e.g., "Home_2.4G" and "Home_5G."
  • On your phone, connect to the 2.4GHz network.
  • Go through the Z Grills 2.0 App setup process.
  • Once the grill is paired, you can reconnect your phone to your preferred network — the grill will maintain its 2.4GHz connection independently.
  • Most routers support switching between 2.4G and 5G networks, but you'll need to do it manually. If you need help, you can reach out to your router’s manufacturer. If your router doesn’t support 2.4G, you’ll need to use a separate router that does.
