Why Does Temperature Spike at Startup? (It's Normal)

It’s completely normal for your Z Grills to overshoot the target temperature by 30–50°F during the first 10–15 minutes of preheating.

Why It Happens

When the grill starts, the controller feeds a standard ignition burst of pellets, regardless of your target temperature. This initial load burns off and may push the temperature above your set point. Once the fire is established, the PID controller takes over its regular regulation cycle and brings the temperature down to your target within a few minutes.
